Moravians at Springplace

From Salem to Spring Place: Who Where the Moravians? Dr. John Hutcheson will speak about the Moravians at the September 15th meeting of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society. The meeting will be at the Moravian Spring Picnic Shed in Spring Place, Murray County at 2:30 p.m.. Many of our community members know a lot about the work of the Moravians in Spring Place but not a lot about the denomination itself. Dr. Hutcheson will tell us about its European origins, its arrival in North America (especially in the Southeast), its theology, traditions and more. It will be interesting to learn who these people were that James Vann invited to settle on his plantation in 1801. The public is cordially invited to attend. For further information, please contact the History Center at the Archives,715 Chattanooga Ave or 706-278-0217 or wmhs@optilink.us or www.whitfieldmurrayhistoricalsociety.org Dr. Hutcheson was born in Winston- Salem, NC, and grew up in the Moravian Church, the church his mother began attending when she was a child. His undergraduate and graduate studies were at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he majored in history and specialized in modern British history, particularly the period between 1870 and the end of World War II. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1973 and teaching for a year at Chapel Hill, he then joined the faculty of what was then Dalton Junior College. During his time at the College he taught world history and U.S. history and in 1997 became Chair of the Division of Social Sciences. In 2003 Dr. Hutcheson was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs. Since his retirement in 2011 he has done some guest lecturing, worked with various community organizations such as Dalton Historic PreservationCommission,DaltonCivilWar150thCommission. He also serves on the boards of Friendship House, Artistic Civic Theater, and the Dalton/Whitfield County Hospital Authority. He and his wife, Marilyn, are active members of the St. Mark?s Episcopal Church and have two grown daughters, each of whom has blessed with them with a grandson.
