Fall into fungi! Kick off the season at Gowin Valley Farms and learn how to inoculate your own mushroom logs!

Join Gowin Valley Farms for their third educational workshop and farm tour.

You will learn about different mushroom species and their preferred tree types.  We will take a deep dive into one variety (to be announced) and understand how to inoculate logs for a multi-year, perennial fruiting – bringing plenty of homegrown mushrooms into your kitchen each year!

We will explore log selection, inoculation methods and fruiting shiitakes as well as discuss regenerative mycological practices and how you can integrate fungi into your life in the kitchen, garden and more!

During the workshop each participant will get to drill holes in 6-8 logs each, fill the holes in with dowels or sawn, cover the spawn with wax and then celebrate a job well done by taking one home after enjoying light snacks and drinks on a small farm tour!

Facilitators

Emma Reigel is a practicing mycologist and co-founder of Gowin Valley Farms LLC. She began dedicating her life’s work to mushrooms and agriculture in 2020. The entirety of her current work is focused on building Gowin Valley Farms mushroom farm, an organic mushroom farm focusing on institutional research and cultivating a locally-sourced community through facilitating educational events, teaching and sharing mycological practices as well as providing locally grown products to locals.

Gabriel Harrison is intrigued by the potential to discover new mycological findings as a mycologist. Co-founder of Gowin Valley Farms, Gabe is responsible for many facets of our farm, including all things production. He currently manages our mushroom production while innovating new growing techniques for operational success (and cool science projects to discover new findings in mycoremediation). He enjoys providing communities with resources to integrate mushrooms into daily practices and expand our understanding of mycology locally and beyond.

Together, Emma and Gabe work with KSU and Cornell University on a USDA/ GA Dept of Agriculture Specialty Crops Block Grant researching innovative indoor gourmet mushroom growing mechanisms. Gowin Valley Farms has also partnered with UTC to create a community internship program offering undergraduates the opportunity to work on a federal grant, and create their own research project which will be entered into a global scientific collegiate conference.
