Civil War Hospital in Dalton GA

Marvin Sowder, a member of the Dalton-Whitfield Civil War 150th Anniversary Commission, will present the program of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society on March 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the Crown Gardens and Archives (History Center, 715 Chattanooga Avenue in Dalton). Mr. Sowder will talk about Dalton as a Confederate Hospital town during the Civil War. From June of 1862 to the spring of 1864 many hospitals were established, sometimes flooded with wounded and sick soldiers, sometimes suddenly evacuated.  For example, two large hospital buildings were build in 1863 on the site of the old Crown Cotton Mill complex. These housed the Oliver and the St.Mary?s Hospitals that were formerly downtown. The Pest House,  House of Prevention, Convalescent Camp, Law, Stout and the Fitzgerald were some the other many hospitals set up in homes, churches, stores and other public buildings in Dalton. The public is cordially invited to attend this fascinating part of Dalton?s history. For further information contact the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society at 706-278-0217 or email: wmhs@optilink.us
